NCCOAST Introduces New ‘Health & Wellness’ Magazine

In its ongoing effort to provide Eastern North Carolina with information on community events, tourist attractions, business trends, waterfront living and more, NCCOAST has expanded to include a new realm in its latest publication, NCCOAST Health & Wellness.

Beginning with its cover story, “Avoiding the Fate of Winter Weight,” which lists tips and exercises geared toward keeping off holiday weight gain, and continuing on with stories written on alternative medicine, yoga exercises, dental care and even pet care, Health & Wellness delivers a well-rounded encyclopedia of knowledge that’s catered to keep the mind and body healthy.

Other features include the latest in hospital news, joint maintenance for aging bodies, heart attack symptoms and lists of upcoming events that range from cancer support groups to classes for expecting mothers. “We continue to look for ways to be the premier source of information in Eastern North Carolina” says Tom Kies, publisher of NCCOAST Communications. “We saw a genuine need for this type of publication in our market and hope that our readers find it informative and helpful. As with all of our publications, we seek to improve the quality of life in our region.”

This comprehensive guide to businesses, medical services and organizations geared toward health and wellness covers the five county region of Carteret, Craven, Onslow, Pamlico and Pender counties. Editions, which are full color magazines on quality matte paper with a heavy glossy cover, can be found at more than 200 high traffic locations, including Chambers of Commerce, libraries, doctors’ offices, hospitals, gyms, health spas, visitors’ centers, grocery stores and many other locations. CCC Photography Program ‘Lense’ NCCOAST a Hand

In an effort to continue and strengthen the bridge between NCCOAST Communications and its surrounding Eastern North Carolina Community, the publishing and printing company has begun an outreach program with the photography program at Carteret Community College. Developed between program director Patrick Keough and NCCOAST managing editor Craig Ramey, this outreach program provides hands-on assignments, professional critiques and an opportunity for budding students to see their work published in a professional color format.

“An opportunity to photograph for viable regional publications is an excellent opportunity for my photojournalism students,” said Keough. “It enables them to gain valuable ‘real world’ experience in editorial photography. It’s one thing to lecture on the theory and techniques of good photojournalism and quite another to send students out into the field to photograph for actual magazines. This gives them a chance to apply the techniques they've learned in the classroom, in addition to potentially see their work being published.”

The students were first put to the test in the Oct. 15-Dec. 15 edition of the NCCOAST Business Journal. With a cover story about education’s impact on the local economy and a focus on the role played by CCC, the students roamed the campus in search of various programs, such as those in the medical, marine sciences and culinary fields. Photos provided by these students not only gave Business Journal readers a more intimate look inside the campus, they polished the story and brought credibility to the varied roles education plays on the workforce.

“They were ecstatic when they saw their work in the college feature in the business magazine and are looking forward to more opportunities to shoot for NCCOAST,” added Keough. Additional photos provided by the students will also appear in future editions of NCCOAST magazines, including Waterfront, Coaster, Island Review, New Bern and Living.

Chamber Honors NCCOAST with Community Award

The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce and JobLink Career Center tipped a hat to NCCOAST Communications May 30 by presenting the company with a Community Advocate Award during a luncheon held at The History Place in Morehead City. Six other businesses and individuals were honored during the banquet, including winners of the 2008 Employers of the Year Award, Bluewater GMAC Real Estate and Sound Bank.

NCCOAST Publisher and CEO Tom Kies accepted the award from Carteret Community College President Joe Barwick, who claimed the Morehead City-based company’s list of community involvement “goes on and on.”Among that list is the Barta Boys and Girls Club Billfish Tournament, the Cherry Point Air Show, the North Carolina Coastal Federation Coastal Cohorts Concerts, the Beaufort Celebrity Offshore Fishing Tournament (a benefit for the United Way of Coastal Carolina), the Atlantic House, Project Christmas Cheer, the Carolina Chocolate Festival, Relay for Life, the East Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts of America and many more.

“The people here at NCCOAST have a long tradition of supporting worthy causes in this community,” said Kies. “We don’t do it for the recognition, of course, but it’s nice when it happens!”

NCCOAST recently partnered with the Chamber and the Carteret County Association of Realtors to establish the Crystal Coast Quality of Life Awards. This program recognizes groups and organizations that are making a difference at the grassroots level. Since its inception just one year ago, 13 Quality of Life Awards have been presented to groups ranging in scope from Potters for Parkinson’s to the Beaufort Beautification Committee.

Big Rock Receives Quality of Life Award

The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament received a Crystal Coast Quality of Life Award, which is sponsored by NCCOAST Communications, the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce and the Carteret County Association of REALTORS June 10 in honor of the event’s 50th anniversary.

Chamber Chair Chris Barnes of Cooperative Bank presented the award.

“We wanted to formally thank everyone associated with the tournament for their hard work to continue a fine tradition and to pay tribute to this event, which truly has become the ‘Super Bowl of Fishing,’” she said. “Everyone knows about the implications the Big Rock has in terms of tourism; its economic impact on local shops, restaurants, lodging and marinas runs into the millions of dollars.

Throughout its history the Big Rock has contributed more than $1.5 million to local charities.

Added Barnes, “This is an incredible accomplishment – and one that has a far-reaching, positive effect on the quality of life of all citizens here in Carteret County.”
